Order – Araneae
Family – Theraphosidae
GenusBrachypelma
SpeciesBrachypelma hamorii (ex. smithi)

The Mexican red-knee tarantula is native to the Pacific coast of Mexico, mainly in the states of Guerrero and Michoacán. Its natural habitat includes dry tropical forests, scrublands, and savannas, where it shelters in burrows, under rocks, or at the base of trees.

Lifespan in the wild, females can live up to 25–30 years, while males typically survive only 5–10 years. In captivity, with proper care, lifespan can be even longer. Females weigh between 15 and 25 grams, and males between 10 and 15 grams. The body length of an adult tarantula reaches 6–7 cm, with a leg span of 15–18 cm. This species is solitary and territorial. Mature males seek out females for mating, after which they usually die. The female lays 400–600 eggs in a silk cocoon, protecting them until the spiderlings hatch. Mexican red-knee tarantulas are mostly nocturnal and spend most of their time hidden in burrows, emerging at night to hunt.

They are carnivorous predators, feeding on insects and occasionally on small vertebrates such as lizards, mice, or frogs. They ambush their prey, inject venom to immobilize it, and then use digestive enzymes to liquefy the tissue before ingestion.

The genus Brachypelma belongs to an ancient group of tarantulas that evolved over 100 million years ago. The species is part of the old Neotropical fauna that adapted to the dry environments of Central America.

The Mexican red-knee tarantula is one of the most recognizable tarantula species in popular culture, often featured in movies and documentaries due to its striking coloration (for example, in the Indiana Jones films). Because of its calm temperament, it has become a popular species among exotic pet enthusiasts and terrarium keepers worldwide.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Brachypelma hamorii is classified as “Near Threatened”. The main threats to the species are illegal collection for the pet trade and habitat destruction.

Interesting Facts

  2. Despite its intimidating appearance, this species is calm and rarely shows aggression.
  3. When threatened, it releases urticating hairs from its abdomen, which can irritate skin and mucous membranes.
  4. In the wild, these spiders play an important ecological role by controlling insect populations.
  5. Females can live up to ten times longer than males — an exceptional trait among arachnids.
