WHITE-FRONTED BROWN LEMUR
Phylum — Chordata
Class — Mammalia
Order — Primates
Family — Lemuridae
Genus — Eulemur
Species — Eulemur albifrons
The White-fronted Brown Lemur is endemic to Madagascar. It occurs mainly in the northeastern part of the island, inhabiting humid tropical and subtropical forests, forest edges, and secondary woodland. Lifespan in the wild is approximately 15–20 years, in captivity, up to 25–30 years with proper care. Average body weight ranges from 2.0 to 2.8 kg. Sexual dimorphism in body mass is minimal. Body length is 40–45 cm. Tail length — 50–60 cm; the tail is not prehensile but helps maintain balance.
White-fronted brown lemurs are social animals living in groups of 5–12 individuals. They are primarily diurnal. Breeding is seasonal. Gestation lasts about 120–125 days, and females usually give birth to a single infant, rarely twins. Young remain dependent on the mother for an extended period. Communication includes vocal, visual, and scent-based signals. Omnivorous, with a predominance of plant material. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, leaves, flowers, nectar, seeds, and occasionally insects and other small invertebrates.
The genus Eulemur evolved as part of Madagascar’s long-term primate isolation. Lemurs are descended from ancient primates that reached the island more than 50–60 million years ago and evolved independently from African and Asian primates.
In Malagasy culture, lemurs often have symbolic and spiritual significance and are protected by traditional taboos (fady). The White-fronted Brown Lemur is an important subject of scientific research in primatology, ethology, and conservation biology. Notable researchers include Jean-Jacques Petter and Alison Jolly.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the White-fronted Brown Lemur is classified as Near Threatened. Major threats include deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and illegal capture.
5 Interesting facts
- Males have a distinctive white or pale forehead, while females are generally darker and lack this contrasting coloration.
- Unlike many other lemur species, white-fronted brown lemurs are mainly active during the day.
- By feeding on fruits, these lemurs play an important role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration.
- They use vocalisations, facial expressions, and scent-marking to maintain social bonds.
- Even small-scale deforestation can significantly affect their populations
