The Vietnamese pot-bellied pig originates from Southeast Asia, specifically Vietnam. It is commonly found in rural areas where it is bred for meat production. Lifespan in the wild 10 –15 years, in captivity – 15-20 years with proper care.
Females weight: 45–70 kg, males – 50 – 100 kg. Body length is about 90–140 cm.
Height at the withers: 50–70 cm. Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs are social animals that live in groups. Females typically give birth to 6-12 piglets after a gestation period of about 114 days. Piglets grow quickly and are independent by 4-6 weeks of age. These pigs are highly adaptable and thrive in a variety of environments. They are also known for their intelligence, which is comparable to that of dogs.
They are omnivores. Their diet includes roots, tubers, grass, fruits, and small insects. In captivity, they are fed grains, vegetables, and specially formulated pig feed. The Vietnamese pot-bellied pig is a domesticated subspecies of the wild boar (Sus scrofa). Domestication is believed to have occurred over 9,000 years ago in multiple regions, including Southeast Asia. The breed’s unique characteristics are the result of centuries of selective breeding in rural Vietnam.
Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs have significant cultural value in Vietnam, where they have been bred for centuries. In recent decades, they have gained popularity in Western countries as exotic pets due to their small size and unique appearance. In film and television, these pigs are often portrayed as quirky or adorable characters. Researchers studying their intelligence have highlighted their problem-solving abilities and emotional sensitivity, which makes them unique among domesticated animals.
The Vietnamese pot-bellied pig is not at risk of extinction. However, the population of purebred pigs is declining due to crossbreeding with other pig species. Efforts are being made to preserve the genetic integrity of this breed.
