SpeciesPsittacula krameria

The Rose-ringed Parakeet is native to the regions of Africa and South Asia. It is found in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In the wild, they inhabit woodlands, savannas, and urban areas, where they have adapted well to human-modified environments. In many countries, this parakeet has also established feral populations due to escape from captivity.

Lifespan in the wild is about 15-30 years, in captivity their lifespan can extend to 30-35 years with proper care. The weight of an adult Rose-ringed Parakeet is about 120-140 grams for both males and females. Body length ranges is about 40 cm, with a tail that can reach up to 20 cm. The wingspan is around 40-48 cm.

Rose-ringed Parakeets are highly social birds, often forming large flocks. They are monogamous and usually breed during the spring season. The female lays 2-6 eggs, which she incubates for about 23 days. The chicks leave the nest after 7-8 weeks. These parakeets are known for their strong pair bonds and cooperative behavior in the flock.

They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, flowers, buds, and occasionally insects. They have a particular preference for fruits such as mangoes and guavas, and in urban settings, they can become agricultural pests by feeding on crops.

The Rose-ringed Parakeet has been closely associated with humans due to its adaptability to urban environments. It is a popular pet, and its ability to mimic human speech has made it a subject of fascination. Historically, they have been featured in Indian art.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Rose-ringed Parakeet is classified as “Least Concern” due to its large population and adaptability to various habitats. However, its increasing feral populations in some countries have led to concerns about its impact on local ecosystems and agriculture.

Interesting fact:
