RINGED TEAL
Phylum – Chordata
Class – Aves
Order – Anseriformes
Family – Anatidae
Genus – Callonetta
Species – Callonetta leucophrys
This species is native to South America, primarily found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It prefers swampy forests, lakes, river valleys, and marshy areas. Lifespan in the wild is about 10 years, in captivity – up to 15 years. Females and males weight nearly from 280 – 360 g. Body length is 35–40 cm, wingspan: 60–65 cm. Ringed teals are either sedentary or nomadic depending on climate conditions. They form monogamous pairs. Nesting occurs in tree cavities or on the ground, with females laying 6–12 eggs. The incubation period lasts around 26 days. Hatchlings are born with open eyes and downy feathers, ready to follow their parents.
This species is omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. Ringed teals belong to the Anatidae family, which dates back to the Miocene. Their genus, Callonetta, is monotypic, meaning Callonetta leucophrys is the only species within this genus. The Ringed Teal is a popular species in private collections and zoos due to its striking appearance and calm nature. Ornithologists study them to understand duck behaviour in wetland habitats.
According to the IUCN Red List, the Ringed Teal is classified as “Least Concern” (LC). Its population is stable, though habitat destruction remains a threat.
