MADAGASCAR GIRDLED LIZARD
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Reptilia
Order: Squamata
Family: Gerrhosauridae
Genus: Zonosaurus
Species: Zonosaurus madagascariensis
The Madagascar girdled lizard is endemic to Madagascar. It inhabits humid and dry tropical forests, savannas, and forest edges throughout the island, from lowlands to mountainous regions up to 1,200 meters above sea level. In the wild, this species lives about 8–12 years, while in captivity it can reach up to 15 years with proper care. Adult individuals weigh approximately 200–300 grams. The total body length ranges from 25 to 35 cm, including the tail. Males are usually slightly larger than females.
The Madagascar girdled lizard is diurnal and active during daylight hours. It is mainly terrestrial but enjoys basking on rocks and fallen logs. Reproduction occurs during the warm season. The female lays 2–6 eggs in soil or under stones. The incubation period lasts about 60 days, and the hatchlings are completely independent from birth. The species is omnivorous. It feeds on insects, spiders, small invertebrates, fruits, berries, and leaves.
The genus Zonosaurus belongs to the ancient family Gerrhosauridae, which appeared during the Cretaceous period. These reptiles are descendants of African ancestors that became isolated on Madagascar millions of years ago, leading to unique evolutionary adaptations.
In Malagasy culture, the girdled lizard is sometimes considered a symbol of good luck and protection against evil spirits. It has attracted scientific attention for its thermoregulation behavior and distinctive coloration, which plays a role in visual communication between individuals.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Zonosaurus madagascariensis is listed as Least Concern (LC). The population is considered stable, although deforestation poses a potential threat to its natural habitat.
