Lion Pride of Kyiv Zoo celebrates its 15th anniversary
Lion is one of Kyiv Zoo’s symbols so it is not by chance that at the entrance visitors are greeted by historical sculptural composition “Lions” created by the famous Kyiv sculptor Y. Ruban.
🎂 And today – January 25, our lion pride has a significant date – the 15th anniversary!
🐾 4 little lion cubs came to the zoo on 09/30/2009: 🦁 Hercules, 🐱 🐱 🐱 Khrystyna, Viliya and Dasha.
☝️ Тhree thousand years ago lions lived in our climatic zone – on the territory of Ukraine, in the Northern Black Sea region. Lions are the second largest species of the cat family after tigers. Males are well recognized by their mane, weigh from one hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty kilograms; on the other hand, females weigh between one hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty kg.
😺🥩 The diet of our lions consists of beef, rabbit and turkey meat. One lion can eat up to 7 kg of meat per day. And as vitamins, these big cats like to taste young sprouts of cereal crops🌱
🏞️ Conditions close to natural have been created for lions to live comfortably: shady trees, thick bushes, open sandy and grassy meadows 🌳 🌾. There are stone embankments, fallen tree trunks, different level platforms and claws for lions’ entertainment. Since lions like all cats spend up to 20 hours a day in sleep, comfortable wooden floors and hay bales are laid out throughout their hacienda for rest in the cool season. And in the summer heat lions rest on the silky grass ☘️ with special water irrigation 💧 to the murmur of the drinking fountain ⛲
❄️ Over the course of several generations, having adapted to European winters, lions have grown undercoats and now enjoy playing in the fluffy snow, easily withstanding frosts down to -10oC. Therefore, our big cats are always willing to go on short winter outdoor walks and feel quite comfortable while doing so.
💚🎁 👉 Today on the occasion of the anniversary a special name-day environmental enrichment has been arranged for the birthday ones, which will also take place on Saturday and Sunday, January 27-28 at 12:00.
😽 Come for a good mood and positive emotions!
