Kyiv Zoo Siamangs: Caring for Rare Species

Kyiv Zoo Siamangs: Caring for Rare Species

👩‍⚕️🐵 Kyiv Zoo specialists performed another complex veterinary procedure. This time they worked with a unique patient – Tisa the siamang, a small ape.

☝️ Real zoological parks in the modern world are professional protection of wildlife. And such professional protection requires scientific clarity and careful planning. Animals in such a nature conservation facility are kept according to established welfare standards and reproduce only within the framework of international programs. Scientific curators of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) approve the reproduction of all animals valuable to our planet in KyivZoo, carefully monitoring both their pedigrees and conditions of detention.

✅ Our Tisa and Patrick the siamangs have already given birth twice, giving birth to a male Teddy (05.08.2018) and a female Perry (04.10.2020). So now, on the advice of EAZA curators, Kyiv zoo veterinarians  have carried out a planned procedure to put a temporary contraceptive implant on our female Tisa. A full examination was performed and, of course, all possible tests were taken, because it is preventive monitoring of the condition of each animal that allows us to take high-quality care of life and health of the zoo’s wards. And this is constant systematic work because it is especially important to see the results of the tests in dynamics.

🐒🐒 Tisa (13 years old) and Patrick (12 years old) the siamangs belong to a species with a high conservation status. Both animals are also included in the European Endangered Species Program (EEP).

💚🙏 We must ensure that each born animal makes its contribution to the conservation of the species, is part of a healthy and genetically diverse reserve population, whose representatives are released into the wild. And this is always the result of international long-term coordination of professional organizations.

🐾🌍 And we are proud to be part of this global professional network for saving the planet’s fauna!
