GIANT ASIAN POND TURTLE (INDOCHINESE TURTLE)
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Reptilia
Order: Testudines
Family: Geoemydidae
Genus: Heosemys
Species: Heosemys grandis
The Giant Asian Pond Turtle is native to Southeast Asia – found in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. It inhabits tropical forests near freshwater bodies such as rivers, ponds, swamps, and rice paddies, preferring slow-moving or still waters. In the wild, this species can live up to 40 years, while in captivity it may reach 60 years or more with proper care. Adults weigh between 10 and 20 kg on average. Shell length up to 48 cm, width up to 35 cm.
The Giant Asian Pond Turtle leads a semi-aquatic lifestyle, spending most of its time in water but often basking on land. Females lay 4–10 eggs, typically during the wet season. The incubation period lasts 90–120 days. Hatchlings grow slowly and reach sexual maturity at 8–10 years of age. Omnivorous. Its diet includes aquatic plants, fruits, insects, snails, fish, and small amphibians.
The genus Heosemys originated in Southeast Asia during the late Miocene, around 10 million years ago. These turtles are believed to have evolved from ancient members of the Geoemydidae family that adapted to humid tropical environments.
In many Asian cultures, turtles symbolize longevity, wisdom, and stability. Heosemys grandis is sometimes kept in temple ponds in Cambodia and Thailand as a sacred animal. Scientists study this species as an indicator of wetland ecosystem health.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Heosemys grandis is classified as “Vulnerable”, mainly due to habitat loss, poaching, and illegal trade for the pet and decorative markets.
