ELASTIC TORTOISE
Phylum – Chordata
Class – Reptilia
Order – Testudines
Family – Testudinidae
Genus – Malacochersus
Species – Malacochersus tornieri
The Elastic Tortoise is native to East Africa, particularly Tanzania and Kenya. It inhabits dry savannas and rocky areas with granite or sandstone outcrops, where it hides in crevices to escape predators and extreme heat.
In the wild, this tortoise lives around 40–50 years, while in captivity, it can reach up to 55 years with proper care. Adults weigh between 0.8 and 1.5 kg, with minimal sexual dimorphism. Shell length — 15–18 cm, width — up to 12 cm.
The Elastic Tortoise is solitary and diurnal. It does not dig burrows but instead hides in narrow rock crevices, flattening its flexible shell to fit. The breeding season occurs at the end of the dry season. Females lay 1–2 eggs, usually hidden under rocks or shallow soil. The incubation period lasts 4–6 months, and hatchlings emerge during the rainy season.
This species is herbivorous, feeding on dry grasses, leaves, flowers, and succulents that provide moisture. In captivity, it also eats fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens.
Malacochersus represents a unique evolutionary branch of tortoises, characterised by a soft, flexible, and flattened shell, adapted to rocky habitats. It diverged from other tortoises about 20 million years ago, evolving for survival in arid East African regions.
In local traditions, the Elastic Tortoise symbolises resilience and adaptability. It is highly valued among herpetologists and reptile enthusiasts for its unusual body structure and gentle behaviour. The species is often exhibited in zoos as an example of evolutionary specialisation.
According to the IUCN Red List, Malacochersus tornieri is classified as Vulnerable due to population decline caused by illegal collection and habitat destruction. It is also listed in CITES Appendix II, which regulates international trade.
