EASTERN IMPERIAL EAGLE

Phylum – Chordata

Class – Aves

Order – Accipitriformes

Family – Accipitridae

Genus – Aquila

Species – Aquila heliaca

The Eastern Imperial Eagle inhabits the steppe and forest-steppe regions of Eurasia, from Central and Eastern Europe to China. It nests primarily in large forests near open plains, fields, and meadows. In winter, it migrates to South Asia and Africa. Lifespan in the wild is 20–25 years, while in captivity, it can reach up to 40 years. Males weigh 2.5–4.5 kg, and females weigh 3.5–6.5 kg. Body length is 72–84 cm, with a wingspan of 180–215 cm.

Eastern Imperial Eagles are monogamous and form lifelong pairs. They build nests on tall trees, rarely on cliffs. The female lays 1–3 eggs, which she incubates for about 43–45 days. Chicks leave the nest 65–75 days after hatching but remain under parental care for some time.

These eagles are carnivorous. Their diet includes small mammals, birds, reptiles, and sometimes carrion. They hunt mainly in open areas, relying on their sharp eyesight and fast flight.

Modern large eagles evolved from ancestors that lived in Eurasia over 2 million years ago. The Eastern Imperial Eagle is closely related to the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), sharing a common evolutionary lineage.

In many cultures, the Imperial Eagle symbolizes power and strength. Its image has been used on coats of arms and flags of various states. Ukrainian ornithologist Petro Puchkov studied this species’ population in Ukraine.

According to the IUCN Red List, the Eastern Imperial Eagle is classified as “Vulnerable” due to habitat destruction and lead poisoning from hunting ammunition.
