The Derbian parakeet inhabits the mountainous regions of northeastern India, southern China, and Bhutan. Its preferred habitats are coniferous and mixed forests at elevations between 1,500 and 4,000 meters above sea level.
Lifespan in the wild is about 20 years, while in captivity, with proper care, they can live up to 30 years. Both males and females weigh between 200 and 250 grams. The total body length reaches up to 50 cm, including the tail, which makes up a significant portion. Their wingspan ranges from 15 to 20 cm.
Derbian parakeets are monogamous. Their breeding season in the wild runs from March to May. Females lay 2 – 4 eggs in tree cavities, which they incubate for about 23–25 days. During this period, males provide food. Chicks leave the nest 6–8 weeks after hatching. These birds are highly social and communicate through loud vocalizations. While generally peaceful, they can display aggression when defending their territory.
Primarily herbivorous, Derbian parakeets feed on seeds, nuts, fruits (especially figs), flowers, and buds. They are known to raid crops, such as grains, which occasionally leads to conflicts with farmers. The Derbian parakeet belongs to the genus Psittacula, which evolved in South Asia. The species has adapted to mountainous environments, developing resilience to colder temperatures.
In Chinese culture, this parakeet symbolizes elegance and intelligence. Its vibrant appearance and ability to mimic human speech make it a popular pet worldwide. However, illegal trapping for the pet trade can negatively affect wild populations.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Psittacula derbiana is classified as “Least Concern.” However, habitat loss due to deforestation and illegal trapping pose significant threats to the species.
