The Cuban False Chameleon is an endemic species of Cuba, inhabiting humid and dry forests, gardens, and shrublands. It is most commonly found in the eastern part of the island, where it leads an arboreal lifestyle. In the wild, this species lives around 5–8 years, while in captivity it can live up to 10 years with proper care. The body mass ranges between 25 and 35 grams. Males are generally slightly larger than females. Body length is 15–20 cm, with about half of it being the tail.

The Cuban False Chameleon is a territorial reptile. Males actively defend their territories by displaying their colorful throat pouch (dewlap). Females lay 1–2 eggs several times a year, usually burying them in moist soil or leaf litter. The incubation period lasts 60–75 days, and hatchlings become independent shortly after hatching. An omnivorous species, it mainly feeds on insects such as crickets, ants, and spiders but also consumes plant matter like fruits and nectar.
The genus Anolis is one of the oldest and most diverse among New World lizards, dating back approximately 40–50 million years. Cuban species evolved due to geographical isolation on the island.

The Cuban False Chameleon is known for its calm and docile temperament, which has made it a popular pet among reptile enthusiasts. It is called a “false chameleon” because of its ability to slowly change color and its characteristic eye movement.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Anolis chamaeleonides is classified as Least Concern. The main threats include habitat loss due to deforestation and urban expansion.
