Children – wisent kindergarten of KyivZoo

🏞️ Have you already had time to get to know the calves of KyivZoo wisent family?

💚 The “baby-girls” UKazka* and UKliyka* were born only last month but they are already confidently running after their mothers all over the enclosure and playing happily with each other.

✅🙃 And each of them now has a lot of things to do: jump over a branch, scratch their back against a brush, rest their forehead against a tree trunk, taste “adult” food, and the most difficult thing is to run through the enclosure without getting tangled in their four legs.

🦬🦬 Mothers Mira and Mukha closely monitor their children’s every step and are ready to help at any moment, and most importantly – to reward their children’s sporting achievements with the most delicious warm mother’s milk 🍼

*☝️❗ The European bison (wisent) is one of the sad stories about the destruction of the animal world by human. The completely extinct species was saved thanks to the painstaking work of many zoos and nature reserves.

Population recovery took place from two dozen animals preserved in zoos. But, taking into account the biology of these animals, their natural timidity, special diet, the ability of females to give birth to only one calf per year – breeding did not occur so quickly. Each born wisent calf (especially females) is a treasure of breeding work and immediately becomes a participant of the international program for the preservation of endangered species. All calves are registered in the pedigree (a single stud book) and have a unique stud number and a nickname that immediately determines the year and place of birth of the animal. So, this year, all wisent born in Ukraine have nicknames starting with the letters UK 🇺🇦

Today, the population of these animals in Ukraine is about 400 individuals, and therefore some calves born have sometimes funny nicknames, but they are correct for registration. That’s how funny the names of our “treasures” sound: Ukazka and Ukliyka 😉 💙💛
