The domestic chicken originates from the red junglefowl (Gallus gallus), which inhabited tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia. Today, domestic chickens are found worldwide due to domestication. Lifespan in the wild is 5–10 years, in captivity up to 10–15 years with proper care. Females weight 1,5–3 kg, males – 2-5 kg. Body length: 40–70 cm.
Wingspan: 50–75 cm.
Chickens live in social groups with a clear hierarchy (“pecking order”). Females lay eggs, usually one per day, with a clutch of up to 12–15 eggs. Incubation lasts about 21 days, after which chicks hatch and are capable of following their mother from the first days of life. Chicks grow quickly and mature at 5–6 months.
Omnivores. Their diet includes grains, seeds, grass, fruits, as well as insects, worms, and small invertebrates. The domestication of chickens occurred approximately 7,000–10,000 years ago in Southeast Asia, where they served as an important food source. Their wild ancestors, the red junglefowl, still inhabit the region.
Chickens play a significant role in the culture of many nations, symbolizing fertility, the sun, and prosperity. They have been depicted in art, folklore, and legends. In modern times, chickens are a primary source of meat and eggs in agriculture. Researchers study chickens to understand behavioral and genetic mechanisms of domestication.
The domestic chicken is not endangered, but some breeds are rare and require conservation to prevent the loss of genetic diversity.
