🎄🎄🎄 In the European tradition the symbol of the New Year and Christmas holidays is a Christmas tree, and people and cities even competed by installing large and fluffy live coniferous beauties. Fortunately in our time environmental issues come to the fore and the destruction of nature ceases to be the norm.

☝️ Therefore, Kyiv Zoo as an environmental institution has been recommending for many years to decorate their homes with potted Christmas trees which can then be planted or artificial ones, which can be hidden until the next New Year.

❗ ⬇️ And for those who have not yet given up using live Christmas trees and plan to further donate them to the zoo as a charity, we draw your attention to the following facts:
1. Intensive cultivation of Christmas trees for further sale leads to the use of various hazardous substances in order to accelerate growth, make them attractive and extend their shelf life.
2. After removing the decorations there are usually plenty of fragments of rain, confetti, cotton wool and other materials dangerous to animals left on the Christmas tree.
3. The use of modern flavorings, dyes, firecrackers and artificial snow from a spray can leaves a whole range of harmful substances on the branches of the Christmas tree.

❎ It is not surprising that our veterinarians unanimously prohibit the use of New Year trees as a supplement for zoo residents.

We would like to inform you that from January 2 until the end of the month, 78 New Year tree collection points will operate in Kyiv – several in each district of the capital. All collected Christmas trees and pines will be sent for ecological recycling for further use in the city’s green economy.
