CALIFORNIA KINGSNAKE

Phylum: Chordata
Class: Reptilia
Order: Squamata
Family: Colubridae
Genus: Lampropeltis
Species: Lampropeltis getula californiae

The California Kingsnake inhabits the southwestern United States — California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico — and northern Mexico. It prefers dry forests, shrublands, deserts, grasslands, and rocky hillsides. In the wild, they live 10–15 years, and in captivity to 20 years or more with proper care. Adults weigh 500–1000 g. Length ranges from 90 cm to 1.5 m, occasionally reaching 1.8 m.

The California Kingsnake is a solitary species, mostly diurnal but can be active at dawn or dusk in hot weather. During breeding season (spring–early summer), males locate females by scent. Females lay 5–12 eggs, which incubate for about 60 days. The hatchlings are completely independent. This carnivorous species feeds on small mammals, birds, lizards, frogs, eggs, and other snakes, including venomous ones. It possesses a natural immunity to rattlesnake venom.

The genus Lampropeltis appeared in North America approximately 25–30 million years ago. These snakes evolved mimicry patterns resembling venomous coral snakes to deter predators.

The California Kingsnake is one of the most popular reptile pets due to its calm temperament, striking coloration, and ease of care. In various cultures, it symbolizes protection and renewal, and in science, it is studied for its resistance to venom.

According to the IUCN, the species is classified as Least Concern, with stable populations, although habitat loss and illegal collecting pose local threats.
