A real miracle for St. Nicholas Day

A real miracle for St. Nicholas Day

✅ This year our ornithologists managed to breed and raise a chick of a rare Red Book pink pelican. But this was only a successful beginning! ˙ᵕ˙

💟 Today we proudly introduce you to a new offspring to the pelican family. Thanks to the most modern European approaches and the hard work of Kyiv Zoo bird department employees, a unique brood of three chicks appeared in Ukraine.

☝️ These birds are extremely capricious and difficult to breed. So such a real miracle became for us like a gift for St. Nicholas Day, which we are happy to share with our visitors.

🥰 They are still childishly clumsy and covered in gray fluff and do not even know how to swim. But do not doubt – in just a few months they will become incredible and majestic pink beauties – one of the largest and brightest birds of the Ukrainian fauna!

🐟 The main component of the chicks’ diet is the freshest river fish, of which each pelican eats as much as 1.5 kg per day!

📍🚩 And you can find the feathered babies in the Winter Aviary in the lower park of Kyiv Zoo.

😍 Come see our pink miracle!

✔️ REFERENCE
Of the more than 400 members of the European Association of Zoos (EAZA), 109 institutions keep pink pelicans. This year, only 12 institutions managed to obtain offspring of this rare bird.
Currently, Kyiv Zoo collection keeps 2 species of pelicans at once – pink and curly, which makes our zoo unique among nature conservation institutions.
