4th of October is the World Animal Protection Day

🐾💚🌍 Almost a hundred years ago the World Animal Protection Day was founded to draw attention to the fact that we are not the only inhabitants of the planet Earth, that animals have rights and their well-being is extremely important.

❗❌ According to data from the International Union for Nature Conservation, 28% of all animal and plant species known to mankind are now on the verge of extinction.

✅ Reserves and real zoological parks were created precisely to preserve and reproduce the disappearing biodiversity.

☝️ Did you know that Kyiv Zoo plays a key role in filling the world’s largest and most complete knowledge base about more than 22,000 species kept in zoos and aquariums? As a member of the global non-profit organization Species360, Kyiv Zoo provides daily data on the animals and groups it cares for, from life cycle characteristics to veterinary information.

🔎 This information is recorded in the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), now 50 years old and the world’s largest source of species data. To date, Kyiv Zoo has provided data on over 2999 animals and 618 species, subspecies and breeds to Species360 ZIMS.

📊 ZIMS combines the data of Kyiv Zoo with the data of like-minded institutions for the conservation of species around the world. The result is changing what is known about animals and their environments, including insights into disease treatment, animal welfare, population health and species conservation. And in line with the Single Plan Strategy, Species360 and the IUCN Red List have started mutual integration of wildlife conservation data this year.

💚🙏 We are proud to be a part of this international effort and its impact on animal welfare and wildlife conservation. By continuing to share our knowledge and experience, we can make even greater strides in protecting the planet’s biodiversity. After all, only thanks to joint efforts we will be able to stop the destruction of nature!
