International Cooperation for the Restoration of Ukrainian Fauna
☝️🐾 Kyiv Zoo has launched a new conservation initiative in collaboration with one of Denmark’s most progressive zoos – the Knuthenborg Safaripark, a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).
🤝🐹 Our cooperation began during the challenging times of the Russian invasion. Despite the ongoing war, on September 18-19, 2025, the director of Knuthenborg Safaripark, Kristoffer Knuth, visited Kyiv to personally observe the operations of Kyiv Zoo during wartime. Our guest showed particular interest in the Center for the Recovery and Reintroduction of Rare Species, whose work inspired the establishment of a similar center in Knuthenborg. We also discussed the possibilities of implementing joint projects focused on the breeding and reintroduction of European hamsters (Cricetus cricetus) and other rare small mammal species in Europe.
🙏✅ Now, in May 2026, we have commenced the implementation of our joint international program for the breeding and reintroduction of small mammals. In the first phase, we, along with our Danish colleagues, will care for the breeding of the European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) at our two centers. Moving forward, we plan to jointly release these animals to restore the Black Sea natural populations of this species, which have suffered greatly due to the barbaric Russian ecocide.
🇺🇦🌿 Ukrainian nature will thrive! And our European colleagues will assist us in its restoration!
